Last Update: August 26th, 2010
Inshore:
Fantastic numbers of small to mid size trout are being reported on a daily business. Catches of 15-40 fish per trip have been common, with the best numbers coming from fishing shell rakes in 3-5ft of water using live shrimp under a popping float or a DOA shrimp. Quality trout ( including one weighed recently just under 5 pounds) have also been reported taking topwater plugs early in the mornings. Personal favorite topwater plugs would be a super spook jr or a ba-donk-a-donk, but almost any "walk the dog" type plug will produce. As the water temps slowly begin to fall, now also starts a great time of the year to slowly begin switching over to using artificials. A ZMAN chatter jighead, ZMAN elaz-tech grubs, DOA shrimp, and some buck tails should all be in a fisherman's aresenal going into fall. Reds have been found in good numbers tailing in the grass on high-water lately, and will readily take a Gulp shrimp or ZMAN jerkshad in these situations. We also coninue to see a better than average flounder bite, with the best reports from inlets and creek mouths using live mullet or live minnows fished on the bottom. Tarpon are still here in full force, with great numbers being reported from North Edisto inlet, Bulls Bay, and the Charleston Jetties. Use large mullet or menhaden rigged on a long 80# leader for your best chances at keep a silver king 'buttoned' on the line. Spoke with Capt John Fuss this morning and he also added that he is already seeing some large bull reds in the surf, with the best bites coming on chunk mullet. He also stated that they have been having a blast on trips inshore messing with some great numbers of ladyfish that have been more than willing to crush a live shrimp fished under a float!

Late evening is notorious for producing some quality trout during the heat of the summer.
Offshore:
Good weather has brought on some good reports from the blue water lately. Reports of a strong wahoo bite have been the norm lately, with numerous boats coming back with multiple wahoo per day, including some really nice sized fish. Bobby K and Tim aboard Daymaker charters had a trip a few days ago where they caught 5 wahoo, a few dolphin, and a sail with a couple wahoo exceeding the 50# class range. Capt Brad and Adam aboard Game Day charters echoed the same type report lately, where they recently went out and caught a couple nice wahoo, caught a sailfish and had a few other shots, and even were able to find a handful of nice dolphin in the 12-20# range. Both captains reported back that the best bite was in 130-150ft of water, especially on the wahoo. Bottom reports continue to be pretty good, with some quality vermillions,BSB's, and triggers being caught in 80-100ft of water. Also have had some solid catches of snowy grouper on butterfly jigs in depths ranging from 160-250ft.
Personal Report - 07/25/2010:
Left the riverland terrace landing just after 4pm and headed straight to "our" favorite bait hole. Caught more live shrimp and finger mullet than we could possibly use in just a short amount of time and headed to some favortite areas around the harbor. We fished only a few different spots from 5pm-8pm and found fish everywhere we stopped. We fished a couple different rock piles and a few oyster shell points ranging in depth from 3ft to 6ft. Did not seem to matter whether it was shrimp, mullet, float rig, or bottom rig. They ate it all! By the end of the trip our total was up to 16 reds, 25 trout, 3 flounder, a couple black drum, and some ladyfish. Thanks to my buddies Tim Schryver and Mike Meyer for another great time!
Personal Report from Capt. John Fuss of Haddrell's Point:
This was a really neat trip for me. I had 3 generations of family on the deck, grandad, father, and son. The son, Riley, is an accomplished fisherman and could easily put many adults I fish with to shame with his casting and fish wrangling abilities. His humbleness and mild manner, accompanied with his angling prowess made Riley a joy to fish with. With the trout having taken a hit this winter I have not been spending much time looking for them; but rather doing my best to stay on top of the redfish. We ended up with a dozen or more reds ranging from around 16" to 27". Seeing the future of our sport take delight in hearing a drag scream is a foreshadow that our fisheries will continue to bud and flower. Regards, Captain John.

Youngster Riley showing of his humble fishing prowess.
