Last Update: March 11th, 2010

Inshore:
Spring weather has finally begun to arrive across the lowcountry, and with water temps warming, fishing is going to be heating up. This past saturday we weighed in some mammoth sheepshead that were caught inshore, one stud weighing in at over 11 pounds and another that tipped the scales at 12 pounds 12 ounces. Both studs were caught on fiddlers. Reds are still schooled up tight along the shallow coastal flats, but will be in a spring transition mode very soon where they begin to scatter out through out the lowcountry waters and are seemingly on every oyster point and creek mouth you come across once the water approaches 65-70 degrees. Signs of spring are also evident in that we have started to hear of a few trout being caught, though not in huge numbers, this is a sure sign that everything will be turning wide open over the next few weeks. The trout caught recently were caught on ZMAN chatter jigs, Gulp! swimming mullet, and DOA shrimp. Most were reported from 6-12ft of water along shell rakes with good current flow. Remember to continue to work artificials very slow. Even though the air temp outside may be 72, water temps are currently in the mid 50's but climbing.

**Capt Mike Able Jr of "Able Minded Charters" reported back to me that he fished both this past Monday and Tuesday, and was able to find some solid schools of Redfish. He said the fish had a little bit of "lock jaw" on Monday (though they were able to produce 4 nice fish) , but bit well on Tuesday where they caught 12 reds on a half day trip and saw many more. He reported that the fish were caught on ZMAN jerkshads(smokey shad) fished in conjunction with Pro-Cure scents and Gulp! JerkShads in pearl white color or saphire shine**

Offshore:
Anybody else got the 'itch' to drag a ballyhoo like I do right now? The offshore trolling season is right around the corner, and now is the time to be sure that you have everything lined up and re-rigged. Though there was not much trolling to speak of this past week, many did sneak back out to 50-75ft of water and stock up on nice sized black sea bass before bottom fishing gear gets stowed in return for trolling gear coming back out. Black sea bass are still readily available, and should still have some great size to them. Cut squid, cigar minnows, bucktail jigs, etc. will all produce all the black sea bass you could possible need right now when fished over a good area of live bottom.

Personal Report:
February 21st 2010 - Finally got a nice weather day to coincide with one of my days off, so I lined up Michael Johnson from the store here and a good friend of mine Royce Breland to head out early Sunday morning for some reef fishing for sheepshead and black drum. Left Wappoo around 6:30am and by 7:30am we found ourselves on top of one of my favorite reef structures to fish south of Charleston on a flat calm ocean. The day started out slow with only a pile of black sea bass taking our fiddlers. Stuck with it and by 9:00am we finally started to get bit by sheepshead. First one to the boat was about 5 pounds, as well as the second. We ended up fishing several pieces of structure and ended up producing 12 sheepshead (released) and 8 black drum by just after 12:00pm. Of course we caught 50-60 black sea bass as well that ranged in size from a measly 4inches to 17 inches. Never did find any big sheepshead, our bigger fish were all around 5 pounds, but we had an absolute blast on a calm ocean. Capt Mike Able Jr also reports that the reds have been schooled up extremely well lately on these nice sunny days we are finally getting. Mike has been producing some nice fish on the fly, as well as still doing well with them on convential gear. He still recommends jerk shad style baits to present to schooling reds, and has recently been doing well with the ZMAN streakz jerk shads in combination with Pro-Cure scent gels.

**Spring is fast approaching, and we are wrapping up our reserve orders for Bionic Ballyhoo. Don't get caught late season with "summer caught" ballyhoo!!!**

Personal Report from Capt. John Fuss of Haddrell's Point:
Blackfish 2010: Ran out with 3 buddies to some live bottom in 70 feet of water. The plan was to make a quick morning trip, catch some blackfish, and motor back in before lunch. It was a short ride to the fishing grounds on a slick calm ocean, and once on the numbers we steady caught fish until we had enough. Tactics: Double drop or "chicken" rigs with squid for bait.We had a fine time and have some fantastic eats to show for our efforts! There's no time of year that one can NOT find something to do in the Lowcountry!
